Several paint film defect terms and factors related to leveling agents

The volatilization of the solvent brings the medium with lower density and viscosity from the deep layer of the film to the surface. As the medium spreads out and the solvent evaporates, it becomes more viscous, thus gaining a higher density and sinking to the bottom of the solvent-rich coating. The paint will be moved in eddy motion. As the coating dries and becomes more viscous, the motion initially stops. On the surface of the water, the surface structure formed by this movement is called Benard vortex. On the vertical plane, the vortex will deform and also produce surface defects called "silk".

Due to its activity, polysiloxane will be directed at the gas-liquid interface to form a single molecular layer, which will avoid different surface tension areas and effectively prevent the movement of the surface area, thus avoiding the formation of Benard vortex.

According to physics, the surface portion of the coating must flow to the region of higher surface tension. This flow is affected by the viscosity of the sprayed liquid, the conditions of spraying (air pressure/gas/liquid ratio), and the surface tension of the liquid, resulting in inappropriate leveling, which is characterized by a distinct structure and a corrugated surface. Acrylic leveling agent with the ability to balance surface tension differences can solve this problem.

Actinicity refers to the reflection property of the coating, which is closely related to the surface flow and the mist shadow of the paint film. This property is particularly important in automotive paint, which is constructed on difficult surfaces by automatic spray gun. Baking paint in ovens also has adverse effects on convection. Acrylic leveling agent is the most effective product to solve the problem of fresh image.

Shrinkage cavity

There are many reasons for the formation of shrinkage pores. Such as fine dust, flying paint mist falling into the just sprayed paint layer (surface tension is less than the surface tension of the still flowing paint film surface) may cause shrinkage, not clean or stained substrate (such as fingerprint) paint film itself (gel particles) may also produce shrinkage. The surface tension in the center area of the shrinkage cavity source is smaller than the surface tension of the surrounding paint, which will cause the paint to flow from the area of surface tension to the periphery. Adding silicone leveling agent, the surface tension of the coating is reduced, it is not easy to be affected by various interference and damage, so as to prevent the occurrence of shrinkage holes.

Fat edge (reduced edge)

The edge of the film and the air contact area is larger than other parts, so the solvent volatilization rate is faster, the paint viscosity rises faster, resulting in higher surface tension than other parts. The difference in surface tension causes the paint to flow, resulting in the phenomenon of fat edge (shrink edge). This phenomenon can be improved by the combination of silicone leveling agent and non-silicon leveling agent.
