Dispersants for Coatings: Principles, Applications and Development Trends

Abstract: Dispersants are an indispensable component of coating systems and play a crucial role in the stability, leveling, gloss and other properties of coatings. This article will elaborate on the mechanism of action, types, application fields and future development trends of dispersants, with the aim of providing references for practitioners in the coating industry.

Key words: Paint dispersant; Mechanism of action; Types; Applications; Development trends

1. Introduction

Coatings, as an important decorative and protective material, are widely used in fields such as construction, automobiles, and furniture. The performance of coatings largely depends on the dispersion stability of its various components, and dispersants are the key additives to achieve this goal. Dispersants adsorb onto the surface of pigment particles, alter their surface properties, prevent particle agglomeration, and thus achieve uniform dispersion of pigments in the coating system.

2. The Mechanism of Action of Paint Dispersants

The action mechanism of paint dispersants mainly includes the following aspects:

Electrostatic stabilization: Dispersant molecules adsorb onto the surface of pigment particles, forming a charged layer, which prevents particle agglomeration through electrostatic repulsion.

Spatial steric hindrance effect: The dispersant molecules form an adsorption layer on the surface of pigment particles, preventing the particles from approaching each other through the spatial steric hindrance effect.

Wetting effect: Dispersant molecules can reduce the surface tension of pigment particles and enhance their wettability with the base material, thereby promoting dispersion.

3. Types of Paint Dispersants

According to the differences in chemical structure, coating dispersants can be classified into the following categories:

Anionic dispersants: such as sodium polyacrylate, sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, etc., have good dispersion effects, but poor water resistance.

Cationic dispersants: such as quaternary ammonium salt compounds, are suitable for pigments with negative charges, but their application range is relatively narrow.

Nonionic dispersants: such as polyoxyethylene ether compounds, have good dispersibility and stability, but are relatively expensive.

Ampholytic dispersants: Containing both anionic and cationic groups simultaneously, they have excellent dispersion effects and stability.

4. Application of Paint Dispersants

Dispersants for coatings are widely used in various coating systems, including:

Water-based coatings: In water-based coatings, dispersants are mainly used to disperse pigments and fillers, improving the stability and leveling of the coating.

Solvent-based coatings: In solvent-based coatings, dispersants are mainly used to prevent pigment sedimentation and agglomeration, and to enhance the storage stability of the coatings.

In powder coatings, dispersants are mainly used to improve the flowability and dispersibility of the powder and enhance the application performance of the coating.

5. Development Trends of Paint Dispersants

With the continuous development of the coatings industry, higher requirements have been put forward for coatings dispersants. In the future, the development trends of coatings dispersants will mainly be reflected in the following aspects:

Efficiency improvement: Develop dispersants with higher dispersion efficiency, reduce the amount of dispersants used, and lower production costs.

Environmental protection: Develop non-toxic, harmless and biodegradable environmentally friendly dispersants to meet environmental protection requirements.

Multifunctionalization: Develop dispersants with multiple functions, such as those that combine dispersion, leveling, and defoaming functions, to simplify coating formulations.

6. Conclusion

Coating dispersants are an indispensable component of coating systems and play a crucial role in the performance of coatings. With the continuous development of the coating industry, coating dispersants will also move towards the directions of high efficiency, environmental friendliness and multi-functionality. It is believed that in the future, coating dispersants will make greater contributions to the development of the coating industry.
